WASHINGTON, DC: On October 30, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert charged the national mall with the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. Over 300,000 people were estimated to have attended the rally which criticized the ways in which the media uses fear and extremes to keep the country polarized. Throughout the afternoon, Stewart and Colbert played out an elaborate debate between reason and fear, theatrically suggesting that reality exists in nuance and problems, some dangerous at that, can come from drastic generalizations. The event featured an all-star list of performers and musicians like Kid Rock, Jeff Tweedy, The Roots, Mavis Staples, and Sheryl Crow, and guest appearances from the likes of Sam Waterston, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and yes, even R2D2.
